In 1975, Bruce Springsteen’s career was at a crossroads- would the dismal album sales continue and result in another failed project for Columbia Records, or would the band turn a corner and live up to initial expectations?
After the Born to Run album was released on August 25, 1975, Springsteen began gaining traction. The “Born to Run” tour was generating national talk and curiosity. Just weeks later, when they took the stage for these concerts at the Roxy, the chatter had reached a fever pitch. The shows were attended by local and national press, music executives, and celebrities such as Warren Beatty, Cher, Carole King, and Jack Nicholson. Album sales were picking up, and new fans were being generated. The concerts at the Roxy Theatre were deemed an overwhelming success, and the course of rock and roll was changing.
The band’s popularity had grown so much that a little over a week later, on October 27th, Bruce Springsteen’s face was simultaneously featured on the cover of both Time and Newsweek. It was the first time in history that had occurred.
On this broadcast of Live in Concert, we'll enjoy one of those legendary performance from the run at the Roxy Theatre. It was captured live exactly 50 years ago, on October 18, 1975!
